Metal Magazine Comparason, HEAVY TO MAINSTREAM.

The first and most obvious comparison between the two magazines is the difference of the front cover; Metal Hammer has much less on the front cover than Kerrang, yet it contains a much higher quality picture in terms of colour and production quality, it also has a unique layout compared to Kerrang, with nothing other than the masthead, strap line and picture, whereas Kerrang has all the stereotypical features, such as article summaries, competitions and such.Another difference between the magazines is their use of pictures in the front cover, as Metal Hammer uses an image containing extremist fashion and satanic symbols, and Kerrang uses politically correct imagery and normal fashion in theirs. The difference between the pictures is mainly because of the musical genre and cultures that they reference and speak of within the magazine, and the artists and bands associated with it.
The language used in the magazines is significantly different, within Metal Hammer, there is adult and mature linguistic ability to appeal to the older audience they have, whereas Kerrang contains malformed uses of the English language in an attempt to relate to their younger audience of readers, and uses obvious humour and common colloquial language in an appealing way.

Choose a Sub genre of music magazines and present some of the main titles in detail.

As of most magazines, KERRANG! has a masthead at the top of the page, which is the largest text on the page to tell us what brand it is. The block of black at the top of the cover quickly advertise which bands are in the magazine. The text is in white, to contrast the black and makes it stand out. KERRANG! has a constant house style of 3 main colours, black, white and red. The black connotates dark, loud and gothic which is generally the genre of the magazine, while the red could represent pain, which is also relevant to the genre. The main cover line is big, bald and in various colours to attract the readers attention , which also anchors the main image so it is obvious that they're linked. There are other photos on the cover, which all aim to sell to the same demographic and connotes the same theme as the genre. The plain background reduces the attention away from the main elements.
The main cover photo is a medium close up, which shows everyone's facial expressions and clothes. Most of people are directing their gaze to connect with the audience. the people are also an 'ideal self' to the demographic of the genre.

Comparisons

COMPARE TWO MAGAZINE COVERS

All magazines have a masthead which is usually, the top section of a magazine, and in this case across the masthead there is strap line, which puts the magazines ideology into a slogan or sentence. Most magazines tend to have aspirational people as their model on the cover, because they want to be your role model, as they are what people dream of when thinking of a richer, higher status, more popular life style, which obtained by celebrities.

Both magazines have use a constant font, to not put too much stress on the eyes. VOGUE use a subtle pink as the title and coverlines, to match the model hair and costume, and a pastel turquoise to contrast the model. Most magazines tend to use an appealing colour scheme, that appeals to their target audience, so the smart, sophisticated look that GQ has, would mean their model has to be sleek and smart. GQ have also gone for a neat and tidy look with grey fonts to match the model, and the bright red to make that header the main focus.

Most of the readers for VOUGE will be 16 to 35 interested in fasion and in the featured celebrities stories (human interest stories), also we can see that the target audience will be young because the magizine uses sutle pastel colours, which make it sophisticated, like GQ, but instead of feminine pastel colours, they use light and dark greys to create the sophisticated feel, so the age for GQ is a little different in my opinion, from 20-40.
