Development of my changed contents page.

The eccentric std is the font I have used on my front cover and for my titles as it gives a haunting and metal feel to the magazine. How ever, for my contents page, I have opted for a more formal and readable 'Footlight MT light' as it is based on the fonts of Kerrang, Metal hammer and Terrorizer,

This is my new and updated contents page. Many changes have taken place, for instance, i have changed the size and location of my main photo.
i have also used the blood dripping red tab from kerrang and hammer to give the page a more metal feel, and i have kept the theme of red, through out the page, and will for my double page spread.
I do not particularly like the white background as i feel it contrasts too much to the darkness of the front cover, making this page more punk and poser metal than an actual hardcore metal magazine.

The idea of having four smaller thumbnail images relating to the articles was taken from Metal Hammer Magazine, which segregate and elaborate on the images.

Changes to my contents page.

I have made a load of changes to my contents, such as i've shrunk the main image and kept the surrounding white border. I have also changed the amount of logos i have on the right side of my page, which i will probably change again, as it makes the page look quite unorganised. I've chosen to base this new contents page on 'Metal Hammer's design choices. This i feel has made it look more ordered and attractive.

Main features

Main features of conventional double pages:

The photo is a dominant feature of the two pages and usually a portrait, medium close up shot or full shot of the model.Usually a plain background,  Font usually small (main text), which is contrasted by the bold, short and informative title. Text is clearly organised paragraphs. Most of the paragraphs my start with a drop capital.  The pull quotes/Bold quotes from person being interviewed, are larger than the main text, to draw attention to the article. Photograph of them either on one whole page, or overlapping both pages. Some parts of text may be bold or italic to emphasize significance in the article. 

Examples;

- The Eminem one would draw people in, with its simple yet sleek style and the text contrasts with the dark background, making the text stand out, as readers are used to black on white, not white on black. This photo takes up the whole of the left page, but does not have anything interesting on it, like props or intresting clothing. I feel that the layout and gradient of the background on to the model does not suit the double page spread.




- This double page spread has got a minimalist colour scheme, so draws peoples attention. The large opaque text in the background does not obscure the model and is complimented by the darker font on the right page.
This double page spread uses a standard theme, along with most other double page spreads, where there is a large drop capital, and the article is broken into 3 paragraphs. I, for one, cannot tell that this is a music magazine, other than by reading the main text, as they lack music props.

- The photography on this page has been well contructed and has good composition. there are also props in the photo so it reminds the reader that this is a music magazine. i also like how there are little shapes on the pages, which match the colour used in the text (drop capitals and pull quotes). I like how the image over laps onto the second page, instead of croping the image to fit on just the one page.

- This DPS would appeal the most to my target audience, as it has a monochrome base style with only subtle tones of red, used for part of the pull text and other features of the pages. I like how they have multiple pictures, of multiple scenes, further insinuating that this is a music magazine.

Two variations of my contetns pages

These are two compromises between my final produces of the contents pages.
I feel the one on the left looks more like a front cover, but has more of a house style look. The one on the right looks more like a contents page as it has less going on in the page, and it has a better composition.

I will later be publishing the edited videos of me asking people this, as recording will span over the weekend and editing over the first part of the week.

Contents paaage

This is my most recent update of my Contents page.

 I kept the logos and the tones on the right side, but I've added more photos to the left to advertise the other pages.
I have used the grid to keep the images in line and to create the separating lines.
I'm probably going to change the photos on the side.
I'm also going to change the colour scheme to represent my front cover, so i would have blues and reds, as it is my house style.

I have found the best music to do work to. The Russian band, of which some describe as a 'Math Metal', 'Progressive Deathcore' among other things, but i feel 'Egyptian Groove Djent' is a more appropriate term.

Front cover

This is the final product of my front cover.
I have added pentagrams to multiple, as my target audience are appeal to them. I have also decide to stick with the glow behind the title and the main anchoring text

CONTENTS UPDATE

I have finished writing up the little bio boxes under the logos, inserted page numbers for them all and one large page number box to make it clear for the readers that the main people are on page 9.

Contents Development

For the text, like the page number and the band logos I have used an effect to make it stylists and blend in with my theme and the background.

For these images, I have used the band logos to advise the bands and to make the pages seem more appealing. I have left 3 squares on the grid, to allow for equal spacing and an orderly look. 

This is my current contents page, which I like because of the colour scheme and spacing out of the senates, logos and models.

This is the beginning of my contents page. I have put effects on the model in focus, to draw more attention on to him. His costume is something my target audience would look towards and enjoy, as it has connotations of black metal, which is one genre of my target audience.

Contents page examples

I'm now starting work on my contents page, so I need to look at examples. 

For instance this 'Forgotten Path' contents page is monochrome, to fit the black metal audience. There also seems to be one photo only, of a dark and ambiguous forest area, which matches my photo shoots.
My second example, SPIN, has got one large figure, taking up the length of the page, with high contrast and the main text is dark, with things like quotes and interest points are in the house fonts.
The third example is of a esquire which has large numbers and many photos to draw the target audience, styled in an interesting way.

These are two prototype variations of my final magazine cover.
The one on the right doesn't follow the standard Z formation, nor does the one on the left, but the anchoring text is more in the middle, which is more appealing compared to the right one.
