Contents Page Comparisons

Thumbnail Contents

I have based the bottom of my magazine on this example from metal hammer. This example allows for a lot of text about the selected item and for a preview of what the article is about.

I also like how they have spaced out the text and images, with a thin line, which helps make it look organised and coordinated.

It also goes nicely with my house theme of red.

Main Image Title

I have adapted the idea of having the band name over the image to help identify the people in the image, and also having a small part of the article's information layered on top of the image.

This gives a smooth and cool look that my audience will enjoy.

Where the under layer of the text (model) has varying colours and gradients, i had think of a way to make it smooth and readable, so i place a 'shape' down and changed the opacity so it didn't look like a block. I also faded it out at the right to make it blend in

Contents Tab

I have bassed the contents tab on the tab from Karrang! as i know the blood red and dripping effect would appeal to my target audience.

Front cover similarities

Bar Code

I didn't keep all the parts of the bar code as i felt it didn't match my style. I did how ever, keep the format of the information, the issue number, date/price, and code. This, I felt, made it look professional and ordered.

Bottom Banner

I kept the bottom bar pretty similar to the magazine i was basing it on, with both my house colours, as the '+' are the bronze colour and the words white, this will attract a wide range of people, not just my target audience.

Poster Photos

I have advertised all the posters that will be available in my magazine as my interviews with my target audience told me that would like to see what they're buying and that they enjoy free things.

I used the over lapping layout that the base model has used, this i feel, would also attract more people, as it seems unconventional to normal magazines.

Top Banner

I have also based the top of my magazine like the base magazine, and again, i have used my house colours, but unlike the bottom line, i have switched the colours i have used, as per stylistic choice, i have also made the bar bigger, to make it stand out more.

New front cover

I've changed my front cover to resemble more of a Kerrang! or metal hammer magazine, which is more appealing. My other front cover had many flaws and wasn't as good as my other pages, so i restarted with a new picture, with more props, better editing and better organisation of the sell lines.

The red on the front cover is part of my house colour on the rest of my pages, so it only seemed appropriate that i continue the theme on it on my front cover.

I have yet again used the colour curves to help edit the image. So far, i haven't edited the smaller images. I've also got to change the back ground to something more explosive and eye catching.

Pre production

To edit the image to make it look professional, i changed the colour curves, allowing me to adjust the contrast, brightness, highlights and shadows, all at the same time with an even distributional. Where i have increasing the highlights and contrast, it brought tout the bright red in his hair, thus allowing me to continue the house colour of red and black, with the blood red and his hair matching. Where i chose to have the back light preadjusted, it increased the contrast on the white background, increasing the contrast, making it look more explicit and appealing.

Titles

For my titles, i have use the same font of 'Friday the 13th' from dafont.com i have used variations of the font to provide different feels and effects than a varied choice, as that would be slightly confusing and unorganized.

The two Badlock  titles are examples of the variations. I feel the black one, with the white outline gives more of a metal feel. where as the white one with the black drop shadow gives more of a comic book feel.

These are variations of the pull quote texts. Yet again, I feel that the black with the white out line is more appropriate than the others.

I have placed my pull quote in this style, to increase emphasis on the fact that he passed out, as my target audience can relate (first hand or second hand).

As i have used the pull quote 'its not minimalistic djent shit', i had to censor the prolific language, so as a humorous twist, i have replaced the I with a flower.

Elimination.

These are some of the choises for my double page spread.

I like this photo as it shows my model as a guitarist, which is what most magazines do, to remind the reader that they're reading a music magazine, not a fashion magazine. i placed this photo to the right, as part of the guitar is out of the frame.
Sadly, sections of the image are out of focus and blurry, so is not a prime option for my DPS.

I like this photo as it shows more of the guitar and the angle is more experimental than the standard photos. There is also more of the guitar in the shot, depicting him as a guitarist.
On the other hand, as you cannot see his face, we dont know who he is, eliminating the need for a model...

I have chosen this photo as the guitar looks like its 3D, as the guirat is in focus, and Reaper is out of focus but still very visible. It is clear that he's playing the guitar and all the things that would appeal to my target audience are viewable and would draw in my target audience.

Double Page Spread Photo Choices

For my double page spread i have chosen to use two models, one was a rather opportunistic shoot as i passed a little gallery where he was performing. The background is quite busy, so i would have to blur it out to draw more attention to the model. His guitar is posed naturally, insuring the reminder that this is a music magazine.
Although there are a few things that my target audience would relate to, these photos are more of a punk inide genre, not appealing to my core metal targets. There is great lighting, and loads of props, it just wouldn't appeal to my audience,

For these pictures, i chose Reaper to be my model, as he is part of my target audience scene. He has many relatable props and costume features that other people who listen to the same music would, such as the black bandanna,  long dyed hair, all black clothes, guitar, camo strap and the graphic shirt.
I made him pose in many different positions to match my plans and to give me a large variety of choices and examples.

These photos are taken in different angles to portray Reaper in different views, because of the lighting, angle and amount of him/props are in the shot. The variations also allow for more shots to be placed along side my main image on my double page spread, like my example double page spread.
